Music
Music is used in
public worship in a variety of ways at the Church of the Advent.
As a congregation we
sing a variety of traditional hymnody and contemporary song, sometimes
even a bit of plainsong appears and in the fall we hope to introduce
Taize-style worship and choral Compline.
Parish Choir
Our Parish Choir
provides music leadership for the 10:00 am Sunday service and for
special events. We enjoy performing sacred music in a variety of
styles that celebrate international influences. Choir rehearsals
are on Thursday evenings (7:30 pm – 9:00 pm) and run from September
through mid June. New singers are always welcome! Solo
opportunities are available for gifted singers and instrumentalists.

Adventus Ensemble
For those who do not
read music, or prefer a more upbeat musical experience, our minister the
Rev.
Ken Gray leads the Adventus Ensemble. Adventus sings a
bit of
everything, sometimes with instruments and sometimes vocally. We
meet Monday evenings as announced. All are welcome to join us as
we help bring a lively voice to our common worship. Contact the
Rev.
Ken Gray for a rehearsal schedule.
Jazz Vespers
We dare to call
ourselves “Victoria’s hippest church” not because of our own arrogance
but because more than one jazz musician has used such words to describe
our Jazz Vespers programme, now entering its sixth season.
This meld of an ancient monastic service and improvisation-based jazz is now hugely popular. Our musicians are amongst Western Canada’s finest performing musicians. Our minister improvises in his homily on the music presented. This service is appropriate for those familiar with church and those new to any form of Christian Ministry. JV occurs on the Third Sunday of each month, Sept – May at 7 p.m. Visit our Jazz Vespers page.
