New online Book Study from October

To Love and Serve: Take a journey through the basic beliefs of our faith, through the lens of Anglican Christianity. Walk through the liturgical year, the sacraments of the church, habits of daily prayer, and the teachings of the Anglican Church. See how our prayer shapes our belief and our lives, and how our beliefs lead us into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. This book is an excellent introduction to life in the Anglican Church in Canada.

All are welcome to join this online book study led by Lisa Brodersen, including those who are wishing to be received into the Anglican church. The book study begins in October. Please email or phone the office to sign up for the course.

 Editorial reviews

“Whether you are a cradle Anglican or a newcomer to the church, whether you read it cover to cover or dip into sections of interest as needed, you will find the outlines of our life, both its core and diversity, explored in a winsome way that invites discipleship. To Love & Serve is an invaluable resource for everyone in the church.” —Archbishop and Primate Linda Nicholls, Anglican Church of Canada

Bishop Anna to visit for our birthday - 1st Advent on Dec 3rd

Bishop Anna to visit for our birthday - 1st Advent on Dec 3rd

Would you like to be received into the Anglican Church? Here's how.

If you attend regularly and participate in parish life, you are a member of the Church of the Advent. No paperwork or courses are required. :-)

How do I become an Anglican formally? If you’ve been baptized in water and in the name of the Holy Trinity in a Christian church or Christian denomination, your baptism is valid in the Anglican Church. If you’re already baptised, you can choose to be formally received into the Anglican Church or to make a public profession of your faith at a service when the bishop is present. If you would like to be baptised (or if you are unsure if you are baptised) or would like to be confirmed, email Sr Ingrid.

It is important to note that being received into the Anglican Church is NOT required in order to worship or participate in community life at the Church of the Advent.

Bishop Anna is coming to visit us this year on December 3rd, our feast day, the First Sunday of Advent.   If you would like to be received into the Anglican Church, please tell Sr Ingrid or let the parish office know as soon as possible.

Jazz Vespers needs a new co-ordinator

Church of the Advent's Jazz Vespers has become a popular event for people all over Victoria, and has a devoted following.

It takes place every second month. Our thanks to Joan Hoffman, who picked up the reins again post-pandemic, but Joan is wanting to step back from this ministry. The September concert is scheduled. We are looking for a volunteer to take over as soon as possible, organising for the November concert.

Do you love jazz? Would you like to liaise with musicians to book them for Jazz Vespers?

Contact Sr Ingrid for more information!

This Week's Top Shelf

Marcus J. Borg.  Reading the Bible Again for the First Time: Seriously, But Not Literally.  “A thinking person's guide to the Bible.”
Philip Yancey.  The Bible Jesus Read.  Yancey’s personal reflections on several books of the Old Testament—Job, Psalms, Deuteronomy, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets—and their relevance for today.
Joan Chittister.  The Rule of Benedict: Insights for the Ages.  A Benedictine sister and popular author interprets one of the greatest spiritual handbooks of all time for contemporary people.
John Ortberg.  God is Closer Than You Think.  Developing an intimate connection with a deeply personal God.
Hilary Price.  The Life That Changed My Day: Turning Dead Religion into a Living Reality.  Price uses the story of Jesus’ meeting with the woman at the well to explore “the exciting consequences of meeting Jesus in a wide variety of life situations.”
Richard Rohr.  Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer. Intimacy with God through contemplative prayer.

Reminder: how to borrow and return books:
1.       Fill out a green slip when borrowing a book, and a yellow slip when returning it. The “shelf code” is whatever is written on the label on the book’s spine: e.g., BBLR BOR2, or CHLF CHI copy 1. Each code is unique to its book.
2.       Drop the completed slip into the pink box marked Library. Leave returned books beside the box. Slips, pen, and box are underneath the Top Shelf (the books on display in the seating area of the narthex).
Thank you!!
