Dessert & Silent Auction

Dessert & Silent Auction

Saturday February 15th at 7 pm

We need several volunteers to help with the close-out of the Silent Auction at the end of the evening.  If you can help with this, please add your name to the sign-up sheet on the entranceway table.  Ticket sales are well underway!  Be sure to invite your friends and family and get your $5 tickets from Bev Somers, Gwen Doust or the office.

We already have several bakers signed up for desserts but we need more.  If you plan to make a dessert, please let us know well before the event by signing up on the entranceway table or emailing Jeanine Woodman at jwoodman326@gmail.com.
Several local businesses and parishioners are contributing items for the Silent Auction and more are welcome.  Let Deb Wastle know at debwastle@gmail.com if you have items.  This is shaping up to be an evening of enjoyment and fun, with Jack Knox as our celebrity auctioneer, all while raising funds for the Goldstream Food Bank and the church.

Great response on book study on Biblical Courage

Great response on book study on Biblical Courage

More than 20 at Church of the Advent will be reading and discussing Bishop Budde's book

The name of Episcopal (Anglican) Bishop Mariann Budde is on everyone’s lips. The day after the inauguration of the US President, Bishop Budde, the Bishop of the Diocese of Washington DC, preached an extraordinarily effective and courageous sermon about Unity at the National Cathedral that has everyone talking.

For Bishop Budde, this moment was the culmination of a lifetime spent thinking about those pivot points when we’re called on to push past our fears and act with strength. With her book How We Learn to Be Brave, she teaches us that being brave is not a singular occurrence; it’s a journey that we can choose to undertake every day. In the hours following Bishop Budde's sermon, her book How we Learn to be Brave began selling out online. Note: The link I provide here for information is a US link - mailing would be expensive.

Sister Ingrid has invited people to read and discuss How we Learn to be Brave with her - and so far, we've had an enthusiastic response. More than 20 people have signed up to get the book and join the book study. Most have asked Church of the Advent to order the book for them from Christian Books, and they will reimburse the parish.

At this point, because of the demand for the book, we don't know how long it would take to get the books. A date and time for the book study has not yet been set, although it is likely to be in the early evening, in person, at the church. Don't worry if you can't attend every session - read the book and attend the sessions you can.

The Book Study will be hybrid, so that those who are unable to attend in person can attend via Zoom.

If you've already signed up, thank you. If not, this is your chance (by Monday, latest)to sign up to order the book, and to join the book study.

Celebrate Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month

Happy Black History Month  Not that long ago in December of 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month. It’s not widely known that black people were enslaved in Canada. All year we celebrate the achievements of black people, but this month is BHM.

There are many ways to participate in Black History Month (BHM). View the local events for this month. They include a BHM launch with music and food on Store Street, and a fashion show at the Royal BC Museum, which has free entry.

Castro Boateng (owner of House of Boateng) who is a local chef will be catering the BHM Launch. The Dolan family has used his catering services many times and his food is amazing.

If you would like to check out a couple of your fellow parishioners; Jill Tyler-Dolan is starting her book tour in March, but her book is available at local bookstores like Coles. (More information will be coming soon); William Dolan would also love to share his music with you all, as he has several songs/videos out that are available to stream on many media platforms like Spotify, Apple, and Youtube.

8:30 Breakfast Celebrates BHM

8:30 Breakfast Celebrates BHM

February 23rd

On February 16th we’re celebrating Black History Month with a special soul food breakfast. Parishioners can look forward to trying soul in a bowl! Please join us in Room C following the service.

We’re hoping Bill Geimer is available, as he is invited to share a page of his upcoming book, which is set to be published soon!
