Taize Service cancelled for this Saturday

Taize Service cancelled for this Saturday

The Taize service scheduled for Saturday, July 5th has been cancelled due to illness. There is no Taize service in August. The next one will be on Saturday, September 6th.

Victoria Pride Parade this Sunday

Victoria Pride Parade this Sunday

Sr. Ingrid will celebrate 8.30 and 10 AM services at the church.

Pride Parade is happening this Sunday! Church of the Advent is participating with Gordon United Church under the banner (literally) of West Shore Affirming Churches.

Rev Heidi (Gordon United Church) and I have talked about the difficulties of the traffic and the parking at Victoria Pride, and we've agreed that the simplest way to get to Discovery Street downtown is by bus.

Where: Meeting at Juan de Fuca Park and Ride, No. 95 bus stop on Sooke Road, just off the corner of Sooke and Ocean Boulevard.
When: 9 AM for 9.10, Sunday 6th July
Cost: $6 cash for day pass (have exact change, as bus drivers do not give change), OR the Umo payment app (download and load with money). Credit and Debit cards are not accepted.

The 95 bus will take longer on Sunday 6th because of traffic congestion. The Transit App is suggesting the trip downtown will take just under an hour. This is why we are catching the 9.15 bus, to be there in time for the 10.15 marshalling. We are in Group D, marshaling on Discovery St, between Douglas St and Government St. The Parade begins at 11 AM.

Wear: Bright Pride Colours. Shaena will give you a matching rainbow bandanna, so that together the two church congregations look like a group. A hat and sunscreen, comfortable shoes. Bring water.

Carry: We have two banners - a West Shore Affirming Churches Banner (thank you Tina), and our precious quilted Church of the Advent Banner. Please guard the latter with your life.

We also have four bubble wands - have fun! Take lots of pictures!

Now the sad news. Rev. Joanne, who was going to do supply for me this Sunday and next Sunday has had a sudden family emergency, and cannot come to Victoria. That means that I will celebrate the services this Sunday instead of marching with you. Life has a way of throwing curve balls...

BUT fear not - Shaena Wallace (250) 661-5752 is now in charge of our Church of the Advent Group, and she's highly organised. Call or text her if you need any information. Reverend Heidi is also going to be marching, along with around ten adults and children from Gordon United Church, so you have clergy presence with you.

I will video call one or two of you after the 10 AM service finishes, so all of us at coffee hour can share in the joy and the experience.

Have a wonderful time. Enjoy yourself for me

much love

Facility Support

Ken will be away the weeks of June 30th and August 4th, and we are looking for a couple of volunteers who would be willing to look after the set-ups (and possibly changing the outdoor sign if needed) during those weeks. There is very little scheduled so only 1 or 2 set-ups will be required. If several people volunteer, the workload will be minimal.

Please let the parish office know if you would like to help. Thank you!

Parish Camp

Parish Camp

Rondalyn Resort, Ladysmith - July 11-18 (or part thereof)

You are warmly invited to join us for our fun parish campout, which takes place at Rondalyn Resort in Ladysmith, from July 11-18. Many come only for the day or the weekend, but some of us stay for longer. We especially encourage you to join us on Saturday for the potluck dinner, and/or Sunday morning at 11 AM for the Eucharist service, celebrated by Rev. Larry Scyner.

There is a great pool which is $5 for daytime visitors.

Never been on parish campout before? Join us! It's a great way for parishioners of all ages to learn to get to know each other.

Intersections Course

Intersections Course

September and October Tuesday nights @ 7 PM

The Diocese has a superb course on our history in BC, looking at the way that we have interacted across cultures and race, beginning with the very first colonists.

Sr. Ingrid has completed the course, and found it interesting, challenging and immensely rewarding. Often, we prefer not to engage with uncomfortable subjects, but there is a lot to be learned about ourselves and the unspoken background of the society in which we live. To introduce you to what is possible with this course, please watch this brief video with Bishop Anna.

This seven-week online series brings people together in intentional conversations to:

  • encounter our collective past
  • locate ourselves as participants in the ongoing story of this place
  • explore how to respond faithfully to the truths we find together

...so we can participate with God in restoring creation and affirming the dignity of all people.

A team of trained moderators will offer will offer each of the seven sessions which are based on the information covered in the CRBC project, using video, song, prayer, self-refection exercises, readings and group discussions.

The Church of the Advent will be engaging in this course during September and October, on Tuesday nights at 7 PM (skipping the third Tuesday of each month).

General Synod 2025

General Synod 2025

A Review from Bishop Anna

The Diocese of Islands and Inlets was extremely well represented at General Synod 2025 in London, Ontario.  Apart from myself, the elected delegates of our diocese were Lon Towstego, Jenny Replogle, Kirsten Evenden, Helen Love, Georgina Love (youth), Michael Wolff, and Ian Alexander. Isabel Weeks was also present to serve as an assessor, Nancy Ford was present to represent the Deacons, and Bob Fearnley, who is a member of our Diocese, was present as a representative of the military ordinariate. An Islands and Inlets liturgy was also chosen for the Eucharist during the Primatial election. We truly were well represented.
