Intersections Course

Intersections Course

September and October Tuesday nights @ 7 PM

The Diocese has a superb course on our history in BC, looking at the way that we have interacted across cultures and race, beginning with the very first colonists.

Sr. Ingrid has completed the course, and found it interesting, challenging and immensely rewarding. Often, we prefer not to engage with uncomfortable subjects, but there is a lot to be learned about ourselves and the unspoken background of the society in which we live. To introduce you to what is possible with this course, please watch this brief video with Bishop Anna.

This seven-week online series brings people together in intentional conversations to:

  • encounter our collective past
  • locate ourselves as participants in the ongoing story of this place
  • explore how to respond faithfully to the truths we find together

...so we can participate with God in restoring creation and affirming the dignity of all people.

A team of trained moderators will offer will offer each of the seven sessions which are based on the information covered in the CRBC project, using video, song, prayer, self-refection exercises, readings and group discussions.

The Church of the Advent will be engaging in this course during September and October, on Tuesday nights at 7 PM (skipping the third Tuesday of each month).

THIS WEEK’S TOP SHELF

Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle

Emily Nagoski PhD and Amelia Nagoski

The book that Sister Ingrid recently mentioned in a sermon has been added to the library, is on display on the Top Shelf, and is available for loan. Its intended audience is women—not because men don’t experience burnout, but because women tend to experience burnout differently from men. They are particularly susceptible to Human Giver Syndrome, the societal expectation that they will be “pretty, happy, calm, generous, and attentive to the needs of others,” to a degree that leaves no room for considering their own needs. Burnout describes the emotional exhaustion that often results, and how to overcome it. This very readable book contains composite case studies, and optional worksheets and exercises.

THIS REST OF THE TOP SHELF

Complementing Burnout on the Top Shelf are books about other aspects of self-care:

David Augsburger. Caring Enough to Forgive/Caring Enough Not to Forgive.

The author of Caring Enough to Confront: How to Transform Conflict with Compassion and Grace (CHLF AUG), which was recently featured in the New Book Corner, also wrote this double book on achieving forgiveness and how to tell the genuine article from several counterfeit versions.

Kenneth L. Bakken. The Call to Wholeness: Health as a Spiritual Journey.
A physician specializing in preventive medicine shows how spiritual growth is the key to healing and wholeness. The companion volume, The Journey Toward Wholeness: a Christ-Centered Approach to Health and Healing, which contains step-by-step guidelines to applying these principles, is also in the library at HEAL BAK2.

Martha Tatarnik. The Living Diet: A Christian Journey to Joyful Eating.

A Canadian Anglican priest who struggled with an unhealthy body image, and an eating disorder, shares her discoveries about finding a healthy, sustainable way of eating.

Granger W. Westberg. Good Grief.
An exposition of the stages of grief, by a hospital chaplain. One of the useful points about this very short book, which grew out of a sermon, is its acknowledgement of the many kinds of loss, both trivial and serious, that can provoke feelings of grief. The library also has books specifically about bereavement, including It’s OK That You’re Not OK (DEGR DEV) and The Empty Chair (DEGR ZON).

THE CHILDREN’S SECTION

We Are All Different: A Celebration of Diversity (ages 7-11) and Pride Puppy (ages 2-5) remain on the small table in the narthex, accompanied by:

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name. Written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by Jago. Ages 4-7.

Old and New Testament stories are linked together by the central Story of Jesus. Winner of the Moonbeam Award Gold Medal for Religion, rated 4.7 on Goodreads, and 4.8 on Amazon.

Circle of Thanks. Written by Susi Gregg Fowler and illustrated by Peter Catalanotto.
A book about gratitude and kindness, set on the Alaskan tundra. Suitable for all ages.

Children’s books are available for 6-week loan in the same way as adult books. To borrow any book, fill out a green loan slip from the small bookcase in the narthex, and put it in the pink box labelled “Library.” If you are returning a book, fill out a yellow return slip, put it in the Library box, and leave your book beside or under the box; please do not reshelve it. Thank you.
