Compassion in Action at Church of the Advent

Compassion in Action at Church of the Advent

Please consider contributing to our Goldstream Food Bank donation box if you don't already. Mid summer can be a difficult time for the food bank, as there are not as many campaigns aiding food banks at this time of year. Midsummer can also be a difficult time for families with children who rely on school meal programs. When giving, please also consider back to school items, as well as food and toiletries.

- With gratitude from the Compassion in Action Team

NEW BOOK CORNER

How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith

Mariann Edgar Budde

For those who were not able to join the group study of Bishop Budde’s book, two copies have been added to the parish library. This fine book is as much for those outside the Church as for those within it. The author explores how we make decisions to go, or to stay, or to begin something new; how we come to terms with a reality that we did not choose; how we may be called to step up to the plate; the feeling of letdown that follows the mountaintop moments; and the value of perseverance. She shares many personal examples, as well as stories about others—some real, some fictional—that exemplify her points, all of which go to make a fascinating and compelling book.

How We Learn to Be Brave was published in 2023, and has been catalogued in the Christian Life section at CHLF BUD.

ALSO ON THE TOP SHELF THIS WEEK

Two books on following Jesus by Bishop Tom Wright:

The Challenge of Jesus: Rediscovering Who Jesus Was and Is.
A study of the historical Jesus, with a “so what does this mean for us now?” discussion of discipleship in our own time.

Following Jesus: Biblical Reflections on Discipleship.
Another look at discipleship, based on six Biblical books and six themes.

Discipleship through relationship:

Karoline M. Lewis. Belonging: 5 Keys to Unlock Your Potential as a Disciple
Finding your own calling and living as one who belongs to Jesus.

What discipleship might look like in today’s Church:

Paul Sparks et al. How Neighbouring Churches are Transforming Mission, Discipleship, and Community.
How faith communities that are rooted in their neighbourhood, look to see where God is already at work there, and actively work with others to collaborate with the Spirit in order to improve and renew it.

THE CHILDREN’S SECTION

Children’s books displayed on the small table in the narthex this week:

Anytime Prayers. Written by Madeline L’Engle, with photographs by Maria Rooney.
The beloved author of A Wrinkle in Time turns her hand to children’s prayers, with praise and thanksgiving in the Prayers of Creation section, activities in Special Times with God, and prayer for times of grief in When Bad Things Happen. A particularly useful book for parents to read with their children.

Sometimes I get Scared: Psalm 23 for Children. Written by Elspeth Campbell Murphy and illustrated by Jane E. Nelson.
The well-loved psalm retold for children.

The Children’s Book of Faith. Edited by William J. Bennett and illustrated by Michael Hague.

A book of stories for young readers (or for reading aloud) that includes Bible stories, fictional tales, biographical sketches, and poems.

To borrow any book, fill out a green loan slip from the small bookcase in the narthex, and put it in the pink box labelled “Library.” If you are returning a book, fill out a yellow return slip, put it in the Library box, and leave your book beside or under the box; please do not reshelve it. Thank you.

Intersections Course

Intersections Course

September and October Tuesday nights @ 7 PM

The Diocese has a superb course on our history in BC, looking at the way that we have interacted across cultures and race, beginning with the very first colonists.

Sr. Ingrid has completed the course, and found it interesting, challenging and immensely rewarding. Often, we prefer not to engage with uncomfortable subjects, but there is a lot to be learned about ourselves and the unspoken background of the society in which we live. To introduce you to what is possible with this course, please watch this brief video with Bishop Anna.

This seven-week online series brings people together in intentional conversations to:

  • encounter our collective past
  • locate ourselves as participants in the ongoing story of this place
  • explore how to respond faithfully to the truths we find together

...so we can participate with God in restoring creation and affirming the dignity of all people.

A team of trained moderators will offer will offer each of the seven sessions which are based on the information covered in the CRBC project, using video, song, prayer, self-refection exercises, readings and group discussions.

The Church of the Advent will be engaging in this course during September and October, on Tuesday nights at 7 PM (skipping the third Tuesday of each month).
