Appreciations

The Ladies Guild is grateful for all the church and community support that was apparent yesterday when we hosted the first luncheon in three years.

An enthusiastic crowd enjoyed soup, sandwiches, dessert and beverages all lovingly prepared by a hard-working volunteer crew.

Special thanks to Ed Robinson for his dependable and thorough cleanup work.

Mark your calendars for the next luncheon September 28th!

New Church of the Advent Nametags Available!

New Church of the Advent Nametags Available!

Church of the Advent is in a Spring season, ready for new activity and new growth! Research on successfully growing congregations shows that the two main reasons that visitors return to a parish is 1) the preaching, and 2) if visitors feel welcome.

We are, indeed, blessed to be a welcoming parish. One way to show our welcome is to wear name tags, so that newcomers can address us by name and learn our names easily. Rev. Ingrid likes parishioners to wear name tags, so that she can address them by name at communion.

Please consider ordering a name tag. If cost is a concern, please speak to Rev Ingrid privately. Our thanks to Mike, who has taken on this project.

These nametags are made of a light brass, laser engraved with a magnetic backing so that it will not damage your Sunday finery.  The cost is $14.25 with the magnetic back.  In order to get this pricing, I have to order in lots of 12 or more.   If you are interested, or would like more information, please see Mike Armstrong after church or email me at spike39@shaw.ca and put Nametag in the subject line

Your Ideas for a Multi-Purpose Meeting Space

Your Ideas for a Multi-Purpose Meeting Space

Our parish is in great need of an additional, smaller meeting space. How can we repurpose the nursery to add extra meeting function to that space, while keeping its nursing/diaper changing role?

Meet Sr. Ingrid at the Nursery to chat and share ideas after both services this Sunday, May 22nd.

Cathedral marks the Feast of the Ascension with two midweek services

Cathedral marks the Feast of the Ascension with two midweek services

Forty days after Easter, Christians celebrate Christ’s bodily ascension into heaven. According to Acts 1, Jesus tells the disciples “to remain in Jerusalem and await the coming of the Holy Spirit;” he is then taken up from the disciples in their sight, a cloud hides him from view, and two men in white appear to tell them that he will return in the same way they have seen him go into heaven.

In contemporary theology, this moment is a kind of “inversion” of the Christmas story. Christmas teaches us that God is with us here on earth. The Ascension teaches us that we are also with God “in heaven.” In other words, if Christmas brings divinity to humanity, the Ascension brings humanity to divinity. And if that is the case, then we are in a very good position indeed to accomplish Christ’s objectives for the world.

There will be an opportunity this evening in the cathedral for the observance of this principal feast:

Thursday, May 26 (Ascension of the Lord)
7.30 p.m. Sung Eucharist with the Cathedral Choir and the Choristers of St John the Divine
*This service will also include the baptism of our Director of Music Donald Hunt’s child, Anna.
Prelude Buxtehude Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BuxWV 224
Setting Howells Collegium regale (G, S/B, A)
Psalm 47 (plainsong)
Hymns 247, 374
Preparation of the Gifts Philips Ascendit Deus
Communion Amy Beach Peace I leave with you
Voluntary J.S. Bach Prelude and Fugue in D major, BWV 532
