Jazz VespersPut it in your calendars - Sun 28 May @ 7 PM Broke and Blue came together when pianist Kathryn Le Gros and flutist Diane Berry first discovered their mutual love of the music of French jazz pianist, Claude Bolling (1930-2020). With two suites for flute and jazz piano, the California Suite as well as a number of other pieces, there is a rich choice of wonderful music available to them. Bolling’s fusion of classical and jazz elements in his work is a wonderful vehicle for these two classically trained, versatile musicians. Both are experienced performers, connected to a number of ensembles in and around Victoria, embracing a number of different genres and styles. In the years since forming Broke and Blue, they have become regular performers on Victoria’s Jazz Vespers circuit. |

We gather in the early evening in the sanctuary for a simple service of chanting, Bible readings and prayer. Artistic Collaboration Pathway Toward ReconciliationTuesday 6 June 7:00 PM Congregation Emanu-El 1461 Blanshard Street First peak at the art and an opportunity to bid on first editions and purchase special Remarque prints that were embellished by Virgil. Rabbi Harry and artist Virgil Sampson of the Tsartlip Nation have worked together on creating a powerful art print that combines cultural and aesthetic iconography to produce “Magen,” which in Hebrew means, “Protection.” The piece combines the Hamsa, a symbol that is shared by many peoples of the Middle East that serves as a talisman or amulet against the evil eye (bad mojo that comes to us when we invoke the envy of others), and an Orca, which is a Coast Salish symbol of protection.
